The Dell PowerEdge R720 is a 12th-generation 2U rackmount server and one of the most popular virtualization all-rounders in the homelab: two LGA2011 sockets for Intel Xeon E5-2600 v1/v2, up to 768 GB of DDR3 ECC RDIMM and iDRAC7 remote management. Confirm the chassis type up front — 8x 3.5-inch or 16x 2.5-inch — and check for the PERC H710. As an older platform it's power-hungry and the 2U fans can get loud, but it's dirt cheap on eBay. Does the R720 use DDR3 or DDR4?
DDR3 ECC RDIMM, not DDR4. The 12th generation (E5-2600 v1/v2) is still DDR3 — which makes used memory upgrades very cheap, but it is not compatible with DDR4 modules from an R730/R630. Make sure you buy Registered (RDIMM).
Which CPUs fit the R720?
Intel Xeon E5-2600 first generation (Sandy Bridge) and second generation (Ivy Bridge, v2), socket LGA2011. v2 chips like the E5-2670 v2 give you more cores and better efficiency — often just a few euros more used.
What should I check on a used R720?
The chassis variant (3.5 vs. 2.5 inch) dictates which drives you can run. Check that caddies, rails and a PERC H710 are included, that both power supplies are present, and whether iDRAC7 Enterprise is unlocked for the remote console.
