DS918+ or DS920+ – is the upgrade worth it?
For most homelab users the DS918+ is plenty: same four bays, same transcoding capability, two NVMe slots. Both even support the same DX517 expansion unit over eSATA. The DS920+ has a slightly faster CPU (J4125) and newer DDR4 memory, but used the 918+ usually costs significantly less and is the better value buy.
Can I upgrade the RAM in the DS918+?
Yes. It comes with 4 GB of DDR3L and officially supports expansion to 8 GB. The 4 GB is soldered on, and there's a second SO-DIMM slot (reachable once you pull the drives) for a matching module. The upgrade pays off for multiple Docker containers, Virtual Machine Manager or heavier snapshot workloads.
Does the NVMe cache actually help on the DS918+?
The two M.2 slots take NVMe SSDs as read/write cache, which helps with lots of small random I/O (VMs, databases, many concurrent users). For pure media streaming or sequential backups, the cache makes little noticeable difference.
