DIY NAS / Storage Server — Drives, HBA, NAS Cases
Synology and QNAP have decent hardware but lousy prices. A DIY NAS with used server hardware is 30-50% cheaper at the same (or better) performance and you keep full OS control (TrueNAS, Unraid, OpenMediaVault). Here are the components for that build — from 8-bay storage servers to individual drives with good €/TB.
What you need
- →Chassis: a 4-12 bay case (e.g. Inter-Tech 4U) or used PowerEdge R720xd
- →Drives: NAS-rated CMR (never SMR!) — WD Red Plus, Seagate IronWolf, Toshiba N300
- →HBA: LSI 9211-8i in IT mode for ZFS (no RAID controller with cache!)
- →RAM: ECC is essentially mandatory for ZFS — at least 32 GB Registered
- →Boot: a small SSD or two for mirrored boot pool
- →Optional: SAS expander for more than 8 drives

Frequently asked questions
SAS or SATA drives?
SATA is totally fine for home use and significantly cheaper per TB. SAS makes sense if you need enterprise features (dual-port, higher MTBF) or already have a SAS backplane. Heads up: SAS drives are usually louder and pull more power.
What about SMR vs CMR?
For RAID/ZFS use CMR exclusively. SMR causes brutal problems during resilver and random writes, can even lead to pool loss. With WD: 'Red Plus' = CMR, 'Red' was SMR for a while (unlabeled — big drama in 2020).
Why LSI HBA instead of the motherboard controller?
Onboard controllers often run in RAID mode and present drives differently to the OS. An LSI 9211-8i in IT mode passes each drive raw — exactly what ZFS wants. Plus more ports and better supported.
