- →Server chassis: Dell PowerEdge R720/R730 or HP ProLiant DL360p/DL380p
- →CPU: 2× Intel Xeon E5-2680v4 (28 cores total, perfect for VMs)
- →RAM: at least 64 GB ECC Registered, more is better
- →Boot storage: SSD (Enterprise NVMe if the backplane supports it, otherwise SATA)
- →Datastore: separate disks for VM storage, ZFS or LVM

Mini-PC or rack server?
For 2-3 light VMs a mini-PC with i7/Ryzen is fine. As soon as you want clustering, live-migration, ECC, IPMI or serious RAID, a proper server (R720/DL380) is worth it — and used costs barely more than a new mini-PC.
What to watch when picking hardware?
Power draw! An older R720 pulls 150-200W idle. If electricity bills bother you, look at E5v4 generation (R730/DL380 G9) or newer — much more efficient. And always check the iDRAC/iLO license status, it's gold during setup.
Do I really need ECC RAM?
For Proxmox without ZFS, non-ECC works — you just lose silent-bit-flip protection. If ZFS storage is planned: yes, ECC is essentially mandatory. Don't get sidetracked by Reddit/forum drama — the consensus is clear: 'ECC for ZFS'.
